Cost of Living
When you relocate for flight school housing will be your biggest expense. We suggest that you choose your housing option preference and then create your budget for monthly expenses based on that. For example, the cost difference between a shared apartment and renting your own apartment will be significant.
There are several apartment complexes near our school in Titusville. Once you are registered, we can help with additional resources like roommate and apartment sharing information. If you want to rent your own apartment, listed below are some local possibilities:
We offer courtesy pick up at either Orlando International Airport (MCO) or Orlando-Sanford International Airport (SFB) to bring you to the Titusville area. Please let us know in advance of your arrival and we’ll schedule your pick up.
You will need to have reliable transportation to ensure that you’re on-time for your training. You can find a selection of affordable used vehicles to use while you live in Florida.
Students who are completing their training will often sell their vehicles for a very reasonable price. When you have completed your registration, we can make additional resources available.
Please note: Medical services in the United States can be very expensive. Health insurance coverage is available for international students and optional (yet highly recommended) for our M1 Visa international students.
If you have questions about health insurance or any other aspects of student life, don’t hesitate to contact us, we are ready to help. See below to learn more about how to apply for USATS flight training, financing options and life in Florida.

About Our International Student Pilot Program
“Perhaps the greatest power of educational exchange is the power to convert nations into peoples and to translate ideologies into aspirations” - Senator J. William Fulbright.
For almost three decades, our flight school has had the privilege of hosting international students for flight training here in the United States. The M1 Student Visa programs that our students participate in are the results of the efforts of US Senator J. William Fulbright, which were realized when the US Congress passed the Fullbright-Hays Act in 1961.
The purpose of the Fulbright-Hays Act is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchange. Participation in daily life and immersion in a new culture fosters understanding, and, with this understanding comes the realization we are more alike than different, developing an appreciation of our differences. The M1 Student Visa program is an expression of this purpose.
What Is Allowed With An M1 Student Visa?
International students seeking a rating and training cannot train in the United States on a tourist visa and USATS strictly complies with the Department of Homeland Security and Transportation Safety Administration regulations. The M1 Student Visa allows an international student to participate in a full-time course of study at a SEVP-approved institution such as USATS, for the established duration of all our FAA-approved courses, such as our full Professional Pilot Programs – helicopter and airplane – and all FAA courses offered by USATS.
Unlike the F1 visa, students on an M1 visa can enroll in courses of up to 12-months duration; however, students who are delayed by personal or family emergencies can apply for an extension past the 12 months. Once training is completed students can stay for three or more months for Optional Practical Training (OPT).
M1 Student Visa Benefits
One of the unique benefits of the M1 Student Visa is the flexibility to enroll in courses and study less than the 22 hours per week required by F1 visas. Both M1 and F1 visas provide students the opportunity to apply for Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT). This option becomes available as soon as you complete our training program. Successful graduates can apply for both Flight Instructor and Commercial Pilot positions at USATS or anywhere in the U.S. allowing new pilots a chance to gain experience and flight hours before they return home. Our graduates benefit tremendously from the opportunity to return home as experienced pilots.
Please note, immigration and labor laws in the United States are very strictly enforced. In shopping for schools, be aware that students cannot train unless courses are FAA approved. USATS has many FAA approved courses including the full suite of Professional Pilot Program courses for helicopter and airplane!
If you have a pilot’s license from outside the US, and you’re interested in obtaining an FAA Private Pilot’s Certificate (PPL), the FAA has created a pathway for you.
To obtain an FAA PPL, you will need to fill out an application, form AC 8060-71, and provide other supporting documents. You will find a link to the form and step-by-step instructions on the FAA website here.
Feel free to contact us with your questions about the FAA License Verification process.
Thank you for your service. We welcome veterans to USATS!
If you have served our country, there are benefits that could help you pay for flight training with us. USATS is a vocational flight school approved for GI Bill benefits.
There are several ways you can offset some, or all, of the cost of flight training, including:
Direct loans are available from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) to its members through MBNA American Bank: https://finance.aopa.org/flight-training-finance
Helicopter Foundation International (HFI) offers scholarships to aviation students around the globe: http://www.helicopterfoundation.org/

USATS is approved to train veterans and other eligible individuals under the provisions of Title 38, United States Code: https://www.benefits.va.gov/gibill/flight_training.asp (Students who choose schools without FAA Part 141 approval are not eligible.)
